Conceptual Glass Art Exhibition “Jaunās pieejas / New Approaches” 18 September – 9 October 2015, ground floor hall of the Art Academy of Latvia Exhibition opening: 17 September 2015 at 6pm The international exhibition gives an insight in the diversity of glass art and its contemporary manifestations. Most often we tend to think about glass in a traditional way – as a material of glassware, various decorative objects or stained-glass. Glass for us is a transparent, solid and fragile material. However, glass can be purposefully deformed or transformed in plastic shapes, it can be used to create space, light or intuitive awareness of other dimensions. Exhibition “Jaunās pieejas / New Approaches” conceptually tries to display the versatility and richness of possibilities in glass art as a medium for different sculptural objects or installations. Sometimes assigning only a supporting role – as an element for reflecting the interplay of light and shadow. The main challenge of the “Jaunās pieejas / NewApproaches” participants is to reveal the playfulness of an artist – toying around with various planes and dimensions, using glass as the main sensory proclamation, in order to build “Jaunās pieejas / New Approaches” as a bridge form traditional notions to currently undiscovered ideas about glass in the international art context. “Jaunās pieejas / New Approaches” aims to bring spotlight to glass art, showcasing various standpoints, techniques and additional means of expression. Thus, this exhibition will bring together both students – the young artists, and professors. The participants will represent the Art Academy of Latvia (LV), as well as Bratislava Academy of Art (SVK) and Tomas Bata University (CZ). This event will generate inspiration and additional impulses to young and coming glass artists by creating new and enhancing the existing contacts with the representatives from other countries.
